Success oriented culture prioritizes independence and self sufficiency as the optimal state of functioning. In an effort to be successful, we often buy into this belief full stop. But neuroscience is now showing us what our experience already did. Social connectedness, belonging, is as essential as any core need, and increasingly so for success in life.
The lack of acknowledgement of this need can be experienced as highly invalidating, and often trigger a dysregulated state. In my practice, I teach clients how to be aware when this has been activated. Once mindful of where the pain is coming from, clients learn how to more effectively cope.
